Training guide for spitz

On this page I have laid out my basic 'golden rules' for training your dog. Whatever you are teaching, does it meet the following guidelines?

1. BE PATIENT

Your dog learns by repetition and rewards. Dogs learn in a step by step process. Repeat each step until your dog understands what you want of him.

2. STAY CALM

DO NOT become frustrated, as you will gain nothing. Spitz are very sensitive dogs. If you punish them, they may retain a lifelong fear. If a lesson doesn't go well, Stop! Change to something your dog understands. Always end the training on a positive note.

3. BE CONSISTENT

Always correct your dog when he makes a mistake or disobeys a command. DO NOT correct once in awhile, and overlook it at other times. Your dog will get confused and won't know what to do.

4. PRAISE YOUR DOG

Every time your dog does something well, praise him! Praise him even if you had to correct him to get the desired response.

5. TALK TO YOUR DOG

Always use a happy tone of voice when you communicate with your dog. This way, you keep the dog's attention on you.

6. COMMAND ONLY ONCE

DO NOT repeat a command! Your dog will soon realise that he doesn't need to perform on the first command.
If necessary, gently use the leash to correct him, then praise at the desired moment.

7. ADJUST TRAINING SESSIONS TO YOUR DOG'S AGE.

An ideal lesson time for a young pup is about three to five minutes each session, up to three sessions a day. An adult dog can be trained up to twenty minutes, twice a day.

8. HAVE FUN

Always end each training session with play time. By doing so, you can incorporate old skills to raise the dog's confidence.

Still having issues?

That's OK, these guidelines are only here to assist you with decision making about the type of training we think will best suit this breed.
